This past weekend, the 9th Annual Reel Canadian Film Festival was hosted in Fernie.
Grand Unified Theory Post Movie Q&A Session
Originally started as a spin off from the popular Indie Films Fernie program, the Reel Film Fest has evolved into one of the community’s favourite weekends to celebrate the talent, skill and diversity of the Canadian Film Industry. The festival focuses on featuring only films with a strong Canadian connection and showcases the Canadian Film Industry which is a vibrant, billion dollar machine with production companies and projects across Canada. With a mandate to feature the very best work produced each year, the Reel Canadian Film Festival screens a select few of these productions, sourced from various supporting organizations including TIFF, CUFF, CIFF, EIFF and independent houses.
This year’s festival was another great success featuring record crowds and many fantastic featured films. In particular, the Park Place Lodge was thrilled to help sponsor the opening night film and gala on Friday night featuring the movie Grand Unified Theory
We were also fortunate enough to host three special guests from the film:
- David Ray – Writer, Director, Producer
- Emma Grabinsky – Actress (Lauren in Grand Unified Theory)
- Andrew McNee – Actor (Victor in Grand Unified Theory)
The three guests along with a host of local film fans joined us for a delicious dinner in our restaurant complete with engaging discussions before heading out to enjoy the film presentation. To see our mayor, Mary Giuliano’s, interesting take on the evening, read her article here.

We tip our hats to all the hard working Reel Canadian Film Festival organizers and volunteers who contributed to this year’s successful weekend. The festival was a another wonderful cultural event in Fernie and we look forward to supporting the local arts community’s efforts to develop more cultural programming for the community in the future.
