While there is still plenty of snow in the alpine, the warmer, sunny weather has many people thinking about new ways to explore in the valley this spring.
While folks have finally put away the ski & snowboard gear, they are already being replaced by golf clubs, bikes, and hiking shoes.
The driving range at Fernie Golf & Country club is already open and we anticipate the course fully opening in the next few weeks.
For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of options for exploring the valley and mountain trails of Fernie and surrounding areas. Here are some of our favourite springtime hikes and bike rides:
South Country Trails – Located just south of Elko, just a 20 minute drive from Fernie, are the South Country trail network. The Elk Rim Trail is snow free and in fantastic riding condition.
Fernie Area Trails – Many of the lower elevation trails around Fernie are already snow free. Y’Eddy, one of Fernie’s newer trails on the Mt. Proctor Side is open and is riding great. Lower Trail Dogs, another new addition to the Fernie Trail Network is also open.
The Elk River Trails – the city trail network which follows along the Elk River is a perfect early season trail for walking, running or biking. The wide stroller-friendly trails are ideal for families and also provide access to several of Fernie’s parks including Rotary Park located across the street from Park Place Lodge. The Elk River Trails can also connect you to Fernie’s historic downtown core if you plan to make an extend loop to explore the community.
