March 21st marks the first official day of spring and while there is still plenty of snow in the alpine, the warmer, sunny weather has many people thinking about new ways to explore in the valley this spring. Here are some ideas on how to make the most of a getaway to Fernie BC this spring!
For those still wanting to get their ski or snowboard fix, you will be glad to know that Fernie Alpine Resort is still open right through until Sunday April 16th with great snow conditions and all kinds of fun events at the resort. As soon as the ski resort closes, it won’t be long before many of the lower elevation trails around Fernie become snow free. For outdoor enthusiasts, that means there are plenty of options for exploring the valley and mountain trails of Fernie and surrounding areas. Here are some of our favourite springtime hikes and bike rides:
South Country Trails – Located south of Elko, just a 20 minute drive from Fernie, is the South Country trail network. One of our favourites, the Elk Rim Trail is often snow free by mid-April and provides an excellent early season ride.
Montane & Castle Mountain Area – Starting at the old historic barn in Montane, there are several excellent hiking and biking trails the Montane & Castle Mountain area including a section of the Trans Canada Trail. Don’t forget to visit the ponies at the barn if you bring your little one s along!
The Elk River Trails – the city trail network which follows along the Elk River is a perfect early season trail for walking, running or biking. The wide stroller-friendly trails are ideal for families and also provide access to several of Fernie’s parks including Rotary Park located across the street from Park Place Lodge.
